Gorilla trekking Packing list for Bwindi and Volcanoes National park

The kit or gorilla trekking packing list with items to take and pack for your gorilla trekking safari is not just like packing for any other wildlife safari in Africa. Whether trekking gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda what to wear for gorilla trekking is the same. Rwanda and Uganda being tropical countries experience both dry and rainy seasons. However Bwindi and Volcanoes National park experience equatorial climate which get cold without warning and temperature are usually between 7 to 20 degrees centigrade.  This makes this area quite cold throughout the year. Below is a packing list to follow for your gorilla trekking tour

Long Pants and Long sleeved top for gorilla trekking
When gorilla trekking, you may find biting nettles and stinging insects which you need to protect your self against. The trouser must be securely tacked in without any allowance for nestles to get there way. A long sleeve top that can dry up easily when it rains is perfect. This is because it rains without warning and at any time. It should button to the neck and lose up

Sturdy walking boot
Generally, because of the regular rains, the ground is quite slippery so you need to wear some thing that you will walk with comfortably. When gorilla trekking, you have to walk to get to the gorillas but at times there are broken pieces of sticks that may pierce you. You must protect you feet against such.

Garden Gloves
Gorilla trekking in the jungle involves helping your self hike to where gorillas are. It is best to have garden gloves that will help you support yourself on close by branches or cling to creepers.

A poncho or rain coat
A poncho or rain coat would be of great help especially when it rains while in the jungle. You must be well equipped with either of them. Keeping your self dry through out the trek keeps you going so you must have a rain gear. Some accommodations hire some rain gears to clients but you must inquire about it before hand.

A porter for gorilla trekking
A porter is very vital for your gorilla trekking safari. This one carries your gorilla trekking gears, offer extra support through the tough hikes, carries you on a stretcher when you cannot carry on and it is the most reliable means of giving back to the local community.

A flash less camera for memorable photographing of the gorillas and other unique interesting safari moments.

Insect repellent.

Light fleece for the cold days while at the lodge

What is it like on a gorilla trekking tour?
You rise up for breakfast early in the morning and head to the ranger station for briefing. All trackers are divided into groups of 8 clients to track a particular gorilla family. At this point, in case you have any special request for your gorilla trek, you can speak to the ranger guide on duty.
Together with your ranger guide, you start the trek and search for the gorillas. During the dry seasons, they hike to the slopes and during the rainy seasons, they can be spotted at the bottom of the ridges.
You follow the trail where they were previously seen the day before until you get to find them. Because of there regular movements, you may see the gorillas between 2 hours and more. The way to spot them is quite tiring but worth attempting.
